Spring Skincare: Transitional Skincare Tips

Spring Skincare: Transitional Skincare Tips

It's supposed to be 80 degrees here in Chicago next week (!!!) - as the weather begins to heat up and our skin begins its transition into the more humid months of summer, it's important to adjust our skincare routines accordingly. Here are some tips on what you should start doing now to keep your skin healthy and glowing throughout the spring and summer months.

  1. Switch to a Lightweight Moisturizer. During the cooler and dryer months of winter, our skin tends to be dry and in need of heavy moisturization. However, as the weather warms up and humidity increases, using a lightweight moisturizer will help prevent your skin from feeling oily and clogged. The Sunday Standard's Blue Tansy & GLA Clarifying Day Oil was formulated specifically to feel lightweight and non-greasy, making it a great option for the summer months. If you prefer a cream over an oil, try Alder New York's Lightweight Moisturizer which contains Vitamin C for added brightening benefits.

  2. Use a Lighter Sunscreen. Sunscreen is a year-round skincare essential, but during the summer months, make the switch to a lighter formula to avoid clogging pores and causing breakouts. Look for clean, mineral-based sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 that has been specifically formulated for facial use. Our favorite facial sunscreens are KOA's Anti-Pollution Mineral SPF 45+ which comes in both an invisible and a tinted finish and has a lightweight formula and matte finish, and July Sky's C-Shells Mineral SPF 30, which has a creamier formula and the added benefits of Vitamin C to brighten while it protects.

  3. Exfoliate Regularly. Exfoliating helps to remove dead skin cells and keep your skin looking fresh and radiant. During the summer, you may need to exfoliate more frequently to remove the build-up of sweat and oil. However, be careful not to over-exfoliate, as this can damage your skin and cause irritation. For a gentle exfoliant, try an acid-based liquid exfoliant such as Feel's AHA & Vitamin C Toner, which contains a 3.85% concentration of glycolic acid - start using it weekly and work up to every third day.

  4. Stay Hydrated. Staying hydrated is essential for healthy skin any time of the year, but especially during the summer when we tend to lose more water through sweating. Make sure you drink plenty of water throughout the day, and consider incorporating hydrating foods into your diet, such as watermelon, cucumber, and berries - you can even throw these into your daily water glass to turn your regular water into an ultra-hydration boost. To make daily sipping easy, make a practice to keep a cute water bottle close by. We love the Hydration Tracking Glass Water Bottle from Bink as it comes in a range of beautiful colors and has the option to add a wide-mouth straw, which makes meeting your daily goals a breeze!

By making these four simple changes to your skincare routine, you can keep your skin healthy, clear, and glowing through the summer months and beyond.
